Stretch denim has been developed to give the denim fabric greater elasticity and malleability, by manufacturing yarns that contain elastic threads of e.g. elastane, spandex and lycra, you get a yarn that stretches and then returns to its origin.
Today there are many different types of denim, classic cotton denim which is made of 100% cotton, stretch denim in different degrees of stretch where the majority of the material is still cotton but there can be between 1-10% stretch in the yarns which makes them elastic and comfortable . There are also mixtures with polyester that should make the denim more durable when it stretches.
Today, the majority of all jeans that are manufactured are made with some kind of stretch denim, you can categorize them into several different genres where comfort stretch and super stretch are perhaps the two most common terms.
Comfort stretch gives the denim fabric a little more elasticity and makes the pants a little more comfortable when you move while retaining much of the "cotton feel".
This type of stretch denim usually contains 1-3% stretch in the yarn, the rest is usually cotton but can also contain other materials such as hemp and cellulose-based yarns, among which Tencel, Lenzing are two brands that contain this.
"Superstretch" is another common name for stretch denim, in that material the elasticity of the denim fabric has been increased in various ways, more stretch in the yarn, thinner fabric or fabric that shrinks and thus becomes more elastic when it is then stretched.
In the thinner qualities, you quite often mix in other fibers in the yarn to increase durability, polyester is common.
Superstretch denim usually contains less cotton than comfort stretch, which can affect the feeling when wearing it, many users find it incredibly comfortable with the high elasticity of superstretch, a disadvantage can be that the fabric tends to stretch out a lot after time of use, which means that the jeans become "puffy" another downside is the durability of the thinner qualities which wear out faster...
