classic jeans

Just over 10 years ago, we started developing "Classic" inspired by the old 1950s models from Lee and Levis, where can we find a nice denim, we asked ourselves! After a while of searching, we came in contact with Japanese Kurabo and saw their fine denim qualities, then the choice was simple, classic selvedge in American cotton of the highest quality, so stiff from the fabric rolls and a little gray-blue in tone but so nice after a while of use and washing.

The goal was to produce a classic pair of trousers, not too thick and not too thin! The choice fell on a 12.5 oz medium denim that was papery and stiff from the looms, but once you got rid of some color and excess starch, the pants turned into a nice soft classic blue denim.

Selvedge

With a focus on the environment and the impact of cotton cultivation, we have in recent years searched further to find alternative solutions! Organic cotton obviously better but recycled cotton? Can it work?

We contacted the Italian weaving mill Candiani, known for its fine denim qualities and innovative work to develop new sustainable alternatives, very interesting work in progress…

We got a lot of different samples and the choice fell on a new quality made from recycled cotton and cellulose fibers (plant fibers), ie 100% recycled material.

After a period of testing of a "Classic trousers" in recycled material, we can state that the material of the future will consist of recycled fabric etc. The fabric is soft and comfortable, a little shinier on the surface but not as good in terms of quality as far as we can see.

JV003 Classic is a timeless straight "loose fit" with button fly and bell pocket in 100% cotton. The model is available today in two different denim qualities, a medium thick in 12.5oz and a limited edition in thick denim 19oz. Both models have Japanese selvedge denim which is made from the traditional weaving mill Kurabo. The fabric is a bit stiff when it comes from the factory but gets a very soft comfortable feeling with a nice blue tone after a while of use and some washing. The original color gives the pants a natural and genuine patina over time.

Selvedgedenim comes from old looms where the edges become firm and nice, but they were smaller so the fabrics were only about 60-80cm wide. Levi´s old selvedge jeans are characterized, for example, by a red stripe along the edges for a period.
When modern looms were developed, the old ones were gradually replaced as the new ones produced double the width at the same time.
The Japanese discovered these old looms sometime in the 1980s and liked the fine quality they wove. They gradually bought up most of what was for sale from the Americans and have developed the qualities further.

What characterizes selvedgedenim is its solid edges on the fabric that are visible when you fold up the trouser legs and its raw character that shapes and wears in nicely as the trousers are used. Most jeans in selvedge are in 100% cotton and are sold completely untreated (raw denim) or possibly with a rinse to get out excess color, shrinkage and a softer pants.
